On March 27, 1973 the Thorhild and District Agricultural Society held its first meeting. The primary goal of the Ag Society was to
develop a multi-purpose facility that would be available to various local organizations in the community.
The first Directors consisted
of Bill Daychuk, Lawrence Ferbey, & Victor Wonsik. On April 3rd, Larry Hryciw and Brian Schnarr were added to the executive.
fall of 1974 the main building was erected and in February of 1976 the use of the arena with natural ice was ready for use by minor
hockey & figure skating groups and was also available for public skating. By 1979 the majority of the interior was finally completed
and efforts turned to the promotion of events to be held at the Agriplex. In the summer of 1980 the first Agricultural Fair was held,
which included a 4H Cattle Show, Horse Show and Bench Show. In 1983 artificial ice was installed.
With facilities in place, the use
of the Agriplex grew as did the communities interest. Each year brought new additions to the previous years’ events. 1984 saw the
beginning of the Sunflower Festival and Farmers Day Celebrations. Cattle shows were held every June as were the Rodeo & Dance with
the Bull-A-Rama being brought in-doors for a number of years.
Events began to emerge, such as Trade Shows, High School Graduation Ceremonies,
community dances, monthly Club meetings and even a Lisa Brokof concert! The Agriplex housed emergency service fire crews during the
large fire in the Opal area. It continues to be the primary emergency centre for the community.
The Agriplex continues to support all
ages in Thorhild County and is the only facility of its kind that provides education opportunities, recreation, culture and community
enhancement activities to our rural community.
